Nerd Stuff

with 2 comments

When I first got my MacBook, as I have previously mentioned, I didn’t want to be one of those Mac people. However, after hearing/reading one too many people getting obnoxiously and unnecessarily defensive about PCs (which I think may just be because they’re intimidated by Macs – I know I once was). I may have to join the douchebag parade.

That aside, I present you with a few Mac-centric things that I found worth sharing – most of which were sent to me by Chuck*:

Regarding the Apple TV (I have one, and I admit that it’s lacking):

*Chuck is one of those lucky people who has time to play on the Interwebs, whereas I just have to hop on Google Reader every so often and “Mark All As Read” on 1000+ items. I have no time, so most of my interesting tidbits come from him.

Apple Kool-Aid

with 2 comments

appleI grew up using machines that ran Windows.  I still have to use a PC at work.  I couldn’t (and still can’t) stand Mac People.  By “Mac People“ I mean people like my ex-roommate who made dumb jokes like “Microsoft Works is an oxymoron.”  I see no reason to be a smug asshole over a fucking computer.

Of course, there are people who are the flipside of that who get totally defensive about their PCs.  I guess I understand it a little, because the Mac People do kind of evoke a negative reaction – plus, I think the idea of a Mac, to a lifelong PC user, is kind of intimidating.  It was for me, anyway.

I’m afraid I can’t really speak to the technical aspect of it because I don’t know shit about shit when it comes to hardware.  I can, however, tell you that when I bought a MacBook last spring (after getting a chance to use a friend’s iMac for awhile), it was amazing.  The ease of use, speed and lack of problems was a complete departure from my years of PC use.

I’ve definitely consumed the Kool-Aid, but I’m not douchey about it (though I know that I will never, ever buy a PC again).  Seriously, though, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

Maybe if I were a nerdy gamer, I’d feel differently, but my Mac suits my nerdiness needs just fine.

Oh, I almost forgot – the whole reason I went on this tangent was due to an item I read (via a tweet from @jwage) taking apart, piece-by-piece, a Microsoft ad attacking “sexy” Macs.  The part that makes a pro-Apple argument I often use when someone points out the cost of a Mac is worth a read even if you’re in fierce defense of your PC:

Of course, with the scant money that he’s saving (he could have bought the high end MacBook by matching Microsoft’s money with his own $100), Giampaolo will now get to go shopping for software, where he can easily spend several hundred dollars just trying to match the features and usability of the free iLife and Mac OS X tools Apple bundles with the MacBook.

Anyway, you can read the rest of it here.

P.S. Mom, you still act like a complete idiot about your iPhone.

Overheated

picture-1

Yup.

I was annoyed because there wasn’t a fabric store anywhere convenient to me (Sylvan Heights).  Textile Fabrics is probably the closest, but they were closed.  Wal-Mart doesn’t have what I need.  I decided to make the drive to Rivergate and hit up Jo-Ann.  Apparently this was a mistake.

From The Twittah:

  • So when I get coolant in my car, am I ok to proceed to the fabric store or do I have to go home?
  • I’m safely (I think) on the shoulder, but I hate the way I can feel the car move when people zoom by me.
  • Dad’s now my favorite parent since @tatie, who is much closer, wouldn’t come to the rescue.
  • @chuckmilam I swear I had plans to top off coolant and check the oil this weekend. Just my luck!
  • I give up.
  • Well, that sucked.

I guess my tweet about not wanting to end up as the subject of a true crime show narrated by Bill Kurtis never made it.

In spite of how shitty the experience was, I’ve got to say that I am so grateful for technology.  I couldn’t make it to an exit, and my anxiety would have made that pretty unbearable (and unsafe) had I not had a cell phone.  Furthermore, my first tweet (“Overheated on 65N”) got me a direct message with an offer for help within about a minute, as did a text to Dr. Frankenfurter.

Not being very savvy about cars, I didn’t realize that 20-30 minutes was too long to have the lights and radio on.  Since it was getting darker, I wanted the lights on so people could see me.  Bad choice.  Once dad got the coolant in, my car wouldn’t start because the battery was dead.  We weren’t able to safely get his car close enough to mine to make the jumper cables work (the 25 foot cables are going back in my trunk tomorrow), but when we were trying to make it work a cop showed up* and called TDOT.

Unfortunately, I didn’t make it 5 minutes before I was overheating again.  The leak in this radiator is worse than the one I had in the Camry (I used to have to put water in it every time I drove until I replaced the radiator).  Luckily, dad was following me, so we left my car at a Kroger in Inglewood (great idea, I know), and we’re going to see what we can do about it in the morning… if it’s still there.

Originally I intended to post something more entertaining and less rambling about this, but that was before I became a zombie.  If you read this far, I am sorry.

*I liked this cop much better than the dbag cop who drove right past me 5 minutes before dad arrived.  That dude neither protected nor did he serve.

Know that I see you, know I’m not there

I would just like to express my extreme excitement over the fact that I will be living alone in a few months.  The lease runs out at the end of April, and I’m signing a new one, but the boys are moving out.

When Roommate #2 leaves for work, would it be bad for me to sneak in his room and measure for new drapes?

In other news I’m sick and it sucks.  Just a cold, but I’m a giant baby about this kind of stuff.

Also, I may actually start using the INTERWIRE™ again.   Every once in awhile I just need a little break.  Plus, I bought a sweet TV last month as well as Apple TV, so I’ve been distracted with that.

As for Christmas/my birthday, Mom got me the best gift – which I can’t find a picture of, but it’s the Predators version of this:

Also, please excuse the weird/random post title (but aren’t they all?).  The song and its minimal lyrics are stuck in my head because I keep hearing it in that trailer for Revolutionary Road.
